I have always cared for the environment and I am convinced more use should be made of derelict or underused plots of land. I think that a variety of small scale methods can be taught to the community in order to make better use of some of these.

I also think that school grounds are a valuable community resource and that pupils can be taught how to garden and how to grow their own food as well as being made aware of the need to look after their environment

I have been involved in community gardening in one form or another for years. I work as a practitioner and on a consultancy basis for Grounds for Learning in many schools in West and East Lothian and I am involved in organizations such as the Bridgend Allotment Community Health Project and Forest Schools.

It was my involvement with the Root and Fruits project that led to slot in the BBC Beechgrove Gardens program and a trip to Cuba to study sustainable agriculture.
